SUB-URBAN VIDEO LOUNGE, Rotterdam Netherlands
The Urban Espresso Bar's video-lounge presents:
PHILL NIBLOCK : CHINA '88 January 3 to 22 2006

The American artist Phill Niblock (Indiana 1933) makes films and sound compositions. As a filmmaker he made - during many travels - shots of people doing rhythmic physical work. His sound compositions - composed of different combinations of instruments ranging from voice to large chamber orchestra - consist of one extended tone or cluster of tones. This radical form of minimalism however, results in streams of sounds, which are rich of variations and irregularities. Since many years Phill Niblock is the director of Experimental Intermedia, a sound-art program in Phill's loft in New York with a European version in Gent since 1999. Highpoint in his annual 'winter solstice' consert series in New York is his own day on the 21st of December, where from 6 till 12 am he projects his films via various projectors, beamers and screens together with his musical works played on high volume. The combination of the rhythmic daily work movements in the films and the held back energy of the sounds creates a monumental situation that already can be noticed outside the loft on Grand Street. Sub-urban shows Phill Niblocks film 'China '88' accompanied by a selection of his musical works.

ICA - Institute of Contemporary Arts, The Mall, London Discourse, the words of Oswald Wiener, cynical manipulator of the bio-adapter interface, enters noise with supremely concrete performance from Joachim Montessuis. The code that comprises xxxxx is executed with reflexive data input from Erich Berger and Pure, machinic still life, microtonal drone god Phill Niblock, and decadent networkers Farmers Manual. Numerous participants collaborate extensively within a totally unprecedented and severely overheated lineup including Russell Haswell's and Florian Hecker's UPIC diffusion session making use of an innovative sound synthesis system devised by Iannis Xenakis, and a unique meeting of sensorialist Adriana Sa and NYC sound artist Toshio Kajiwara. A supreme array of intensive collaboration stressing constructivist noise and audible process is expressed by Andy Bolus, Kevin Drumm, Takeshi Fumimoto, Jon Wiese, Aaron Dilloway, and Jason Kahn. Babel-On by Katherine Liberovskaya & Phill Niblock, a 4 screen installation that looks at the musicality of languages; a video-audio installation/performance piece for 4 projections and 6 audio channels; a collaborative work by Katherine Liberovskaya and Phill Niblock
- Sync-sound video: Katherine Liberovskaya, - Sound piece: Phill Niblock

Babel-On is a sound-based audio-video work-in-progress exploring the melodic and rhythmical dimensions of human spoken language, of different languages of different peoples and nationalities. This sound and four large-scale projection digital video piece with sync sound focuses on languages as musical instruments of communication and concentrates on the sound of human verbal expression rather than on its meaning. With its moving images of extremely close-up faces of a multitude of people of numerous nationalities and races speaking in their respective languages about these very languages, and its language-based sound piece, it composes a polyphonic chorus of voices and idioms in continuous interplay, correspondence and/or conflict, suggesting various relationships between diverse geo-political regions, cultural traditions and civilizations. Babel-On creates a very physical, living audio-video flow of variations of associations and dissociations, of different tensions, between image and sound, speech and music, words and significations, intention and chance, a constant flux of unstable, slipping, shifting meanings and perceptions.
