In the late 70s, better cameras and better cassette
decks were making the move to television for single channel video
art a real possibility, I was taping a lot of performance art in
those days, I had a good studio, decent equipment, and some idea of
how to go about it and my friend Jean Dupuy was at the heart of a
distinctive style of New York performance art; the artists he
championed, Joe Lewis, Tim Maul, Michael Smith, Julia Heyward, to
name just a few, performed regularly in the Grommet shows staged in
his Broadway loft, it was Jean’s wish that some of these
performances should be recorded, it was my idea to try to put them
on TV
