Phill Niblock - 2014 Events

I have been awarded "The John Cage Award" from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts. It is a great honor, for me. e2.ma/message/zchgf/7e0y

Jan 15 ,  Klub Katarakt 41 - Antipodes
A premier  of a new piece for three orchestras, commisioned by the Katarakt Festival
"Three Petals" for the ensembles - Nelly Boyd, Hamburg; Trio Scordatura +, Amsterdam; Neon Ensemble, Oslo
Plus playing - Vlada BC, with Elisabeth Smalt, viola d'amore, and Tow by Tom, with the three ensembles.
Three Petals is originally conceived to be performed by three ensembles plus pre-recorded playback. The first performance (by the commissioners - Klub Katarakt Festival in Hamburg) will take place in separate but contiguous halls. The audience can only hear the complete work by walking through the spaces. The piece could also be performed by three separated ensembles in one common space (e.g., a concert hall).
The first and third ensemble move up a semitone through the piece (one from F to F#, the other from C to C#), while the second ensemble remains « stationary » around A. This, theoretically, results in a move, over 24 minutes, from major to minor, albeit blurred by the microtonal character of the totality.

RIE NAKAJIMA & PHILL NIBLOCK WITH ANTON LUKOSZEVIEZE
SUN 21 SEPTEMBER '14 • 8:00PM • £10 adv / £12 on the door

Despite having known each other for many years, and having a long-held affinity for each other's work, this will be the first time Rie Nakajima and Phill Niblock have collaborated together. The results should prove to be as compelling as they are unpredictable, making this a night not be missed.

Rie will perform in response to Phill's film "T H I R" (1971-72, 43 min) and his sound collage piece “ Crick”. This will be followed by another of Phill’s videos "Meudrone" (2013-14, 48 min) with music by Phill Niblock, including the piece 'Summing II' (1982, 32 min) with David Gibson’s pre-recorded cello and Anton Lukoszevieze of Apartment House playing live. The two films/videos will be played in succession and the programme will include other sound pieces made since October 2013: 'Vlada BC’ (Nov 2103, 20 min) with recorded samples of Elisabeth Smalt on viola d’amore and 'Euph' (Nov 2103, 24 min) with recorded samples of Melvyn Poore on two belled euphonium.............MORE>

Klipschorn NIGHTS: Phill Niblock
From Maria Chavez: I was recently in touch with an individual who lives in a loft in Brooklyn which houses a rare, standing Klipschorn Sound System. It’s almost impossible to see a system like this fully intact. When I first knew of the space and these incredible speakers, I told Phill about it and he expressed an interest in playing his music with them. So this has been a careful process to get him the access to play through this system. Like, a couple years in the making…He’ll also be presenting a piece with video artist, Katherine Liberovskaya.
Opening the evening is Carver Audain & a special guest who’s name will be announced the day of the event.

SO YOU THINK YOU’VE HEARD IT ALL?
The brain does marvelous things with the variety of sensory “inputs” entering it –  light, sound, touch. This program pairs a sage of musical and film “minimalism” who specializes in pieces with very extended pitches, Phill Niblock, with the help of David Watson, bagpipes, and with a young master of the way acoustic signals are processed in the brain, Nima Mesgarani from Columbia’s Electrical Engineering Department to lead you to think about sound in unusual ways. Phill’s music is an exploration of sound textures created in very dense, often atonal tunings. Listen, and you’ll hear things that you cannot imagine could have been heard. Nima designs experiments probing how our brain hears speech, and thinks about interfacing brain signals to machines. He likes to invert things, so he will tell us what a ferret hears when you speak to it.  Sounds have textures, they overlay and interlace. And the brain does things with them that you could not imagine!      http://corneliastreetcafe.com/
