Phill Niblock - 2015 EventsMonday January 12, 7.30pm
Rice and Flowers - video, color, stereo sound, 2014, 46 minutes; video: Katherine Liberovskaya (2014); music: Phill Niblock (2008)
Video by Katherine Liberovskaya with music by Phill Niblock (New York premiere)
Since 2001, Liberovskaya's work in video has been focused on
collaborations with composers and sound artists in the context of live
video & sound performance where her visuals seek to create
improvisatory "music" for the eyes. Niblock's music is an exploration
of sound textures created by multiple tones in very dense, often atonal
tunings (generally microtonal in conception) performed in long
durations. The layering of long tones only slightly distinct in pitch
creates a multitude of beats and generates complex overtone patterns.
The piece chosen for Rice and Flowers
is titled "One Large Rose" and was completed in 2008.
A 46 minute very close up long take of counting grains of white rice,
one by one, with a knife point, on a white surface, to the orchestra
piece "One Large Rose" (2008), played by the Nelly Boyd ensemble from
Hamburg (available on "Touch Strings" TO:79). A projection/installation
created for the 2014 multidisciplinary festival REHEAT at Kleylehof,
Nickelsdorf, Austria, Northern Burgenland.
